In a paper read before the Colonial Institute-, Miss Sliafr Who recently tl'AVelied through the Australasian colonies on behalf of the Times, stated that she was sanguine as to the results of the new schemes for the settlement of the land. With Government assistance these settlements would probably attract . the mos,t ifatjellfeetil; workmen in England. The Radical and Democratic ideal and the trend of native liberal thought in Australia favoured separation from the Mother Country, but a much stronger collective body of opinion favoured the retention of the Imperial tie.
The Agents-General thanked Miss Shaw for the important services she had rendered to the Colonies by her sympathetic paper.

Replying to a question in the House of Commons, Mr Asquith, Home Secretary, said the Government hoped it would be possible to award compassionate allowances to the relatives of the men killed in repressing the Featherstone riot during the coal strike, though they had no legal claim.
Owing to the Minister's attitude in this matter, it is expected that the Irish Members will demand compensation for the families of the victims lulled at Mitchelstown, in September, 1887,
The Farrandera mutton, chilled in the district and sent down to the seaboard to be frozen, has arrived in splendid condition. Experts think the change in the method of preserving will be of great benefit.
