Cr Wilson said the Hutt County Council had passed a resolution favourable to convening a conference df County Councils similar to what had taken place between representatives of Borough Councils. At the next meeting of the council he would move that a delegate be appointed to attend. One point he desired the Conference would discuss was the power now taken by Government to graut £ for £ subsidy to any particular work. He considered the allocation of Government grants to local bodies should be made on some recognised principle. He was of the opinion settlers should bo given power in some cases, to pledge their rat?s to meet interest on a loan in • stead of striking a special rate. The chairman said the manner of voting for loans also required amend' meat. Cr Wilson said he intended to bring these matters before the Hou3e, but an expression of opinion from a conference would give him material support. The CDuncil then adjourned. — Advocate.
