Foxton Borough Council.
A special meeting of the above Council was held at the Library buildings on Tuesday afternoon. Present -The Mayor (G. Nye), Crs McMillan, Austin, Startup, Ahern, and Stansell.
The Mayor suggested that the accounts be passed previous to other business being introduced in future. This was agreed fco. Cr Stansell desired to state that he and his colleagues did not intend any disrespect to the chair when they left lasfc meeting, but they thought that the business proposed should be considered at a full meeting.
The following accounts were passed. J. Sullivan, £6 15s ; C. Spring, £8 Os lid ; G. Trask, £1 17s 2d ; T. F. Gibson, £6 5s ; C. Aden, £9 19s 6d, do deposits, £2 ; T. P. Williams, £1 16s 8d ; J. W. Watson, £15 10s, do £1 ; W. Collins, £1 17s 6d ; T. Bowe, £10 Manawatu County, £19 4s 5d ; R. M. Courfc fees, £2 4s ; P. Guerin, £3 18s lOd, do £5 16s 4d, do, £1; N.Z. Ry., £14 19s 2d; Library Account— H. Blake, £l |6s, do, 3a 6d :W. Park, £2 5s 9d. .f-fi-Proposed by Cr McMillan, seconded by Cr Austin, That tenders be called for a ranger for the coming year. Tenders to be in by noon on Wednesday next the 20th instant, and that a special meeting be called on that that date to open and accept same. The lowest or any tender not necessarily accepted. — Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr McMillan, That the clerk be instructed to have the lamps and posts painted in two coats of green paint— Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Stansell, That the Clerk give notice to all property-owners t_ renew or repair all level crossings over the curbing and footpaths. — Carried.
Proposed by Cr Stansell, seconded by Cr Ahern, That the metal placed on the Motoa road be raked into the ruts formed by the traffic on said road and the clerk employ a man to do it — Carried.
Cr Austin proposed that Constable Gillespie be asked if he will accept the appointment for Inspector of Nuisances for the Borough.
Cr Austin said that the constable was a more suitable man than the Town Clerk. The Constable would take the position if permitted by his superior officers.
The Mayor said that there was not a single foot of drainage to convey sewerage away. It must be patent that all refuse went into people's back yard. The accumulations of these years musfc have thoroughly saturated the soil. I the Constable was appointed it would be necessary to appoint a night-man and a site for a night-soil depot. There had been a plaoe appointed for deposit of rubbish but it was not made much use of.
Cr Stansell wanted to know where people were to throw their dirty water to, when there was no drainage ?
The Mayor referred more particularly to nightsoil, vegetable refuse and bones.
Cr Startup seconded. On being put to the meeting the resolution was carried.
Cr Startup wanted to know if either the Mayer or Town Clerk heard anything of the grounding ot the Wirikino punt last Sunday, or Sunday week ?
The Mayor said no report had been received.
Cr Startup thought an explanation should be obtained from the lessees.
The following tenders were opened for metal : — John Stewart, 4s 3d per yard ; T. N. Newth, 3s 6d.
Proposed by Cr McMillan, seconded by Cr Austin, That T. N. Newth's tender be accepted for corting gravel to the Wirikino ferry at 3s 6d per yard, the work to be completed within three weeks from date. — Carried.
Proposed by Cr Startup, seconded by Cr Austin, That Charles Adin's tender be accepted at 2s per chain for cleaning the culvert drain.
Proposed by Cr Startup seconded by Cr Stansell, That the Clerk be instructed to advertise drawing the attention of the inhabitants of Foxton to the clauses in the Public Health Act whereby everyone who has an infectious disease in his house is liable to be fined if every case is nofc reported.— Carried.
