ATTEMPTED BANK ROBBERY.
• — - — ♦> A telegram from Tauranga. dated May 4 snys that the National Bark was attach last nigh^ by burglars, and a clever cnpturf of one of them whk made by ?ergeant Why tand 1 ConStahle Whelan. Sergeant Whytt states that Mr Morris, the manager of the National Bank, informed him about a week ago that he suspected some one would try and injure him,, and most likely rob thi bank, as suspicious partips were prowlinir abou*, and dogging him from the club to the barifc at-night. TFpbn this information he kept a vigilant watch on «he bank. Last night he was stationed inside thebanh. •when a rap was heard at the door. The manager of the bank opened the door, and quantity of pepper was thrown in *Miifl face, completely blinding him ; at the same time the robber clutched the mnnatrei by the throat. Constable Whelan, whc was stationed behind tho door, and wa> also Hufft-ring sevtrely from the pepP pr - ' came from his position and stinck th> robber on the head. Sergeant White then covered him wilh his revolver, and the burglar caved in after a severe struggle. The prisoner's name is William Henry ; Borfield. Upon bis clotheß being 1 searched, ' the following articles ' were fonnd : — A ..knitted bludgeon, a gag, piece of rope, ] piece of soap, a quantity of pepper, and a ' towel. The ptisoner bad blackened his j face to prevent recognition. Immediately , after he was secured, Sergeant Whit< ! rushedont of the Bank to see if he could ' find any accomplices, but only picked up ' a loaded pistol outride the door It ie supposed that then- i« a gang in town, a>- ■ Mr Morris saw one or two outside tlu ' door. _ '
