THE RAILWAY COMMISSION.
■ •*■ The Roilway Commission are determined to settle the Wellington railways quickly. Thoyjeft Wollington on Wednesday last, and reached Masterton the same night, hiving, we presume, inspected the line of railway. Fiom Masterton they travelled through the JGorge on Thursdoy, arriving at Palmerston in the evening. There they were interviewed on Friday morning by Mr Linton (Mayor) aad Borough Councillor Hungan, Coleman, Fergusson, and Jenssen. Mr Linton enlarged upon the advantages of taking the line into Palmerston in pre ference to either Foxton or via Masterton to Woodville, but the shorthand reporter not being present, the deputation promised to forward the various statistics to the Commission .at Wellington. After receiving the Palmerston depution, the Commission wpnt on per coach to -"andon, and th* nee to Bulls, whero they considered the necessities that exist for the Bulls branch Returning through Greatford, and taking a special train, they proceeded to Foxton tho same night, arriving about 6.15 p.m. Dinner was promptly served at Whyte's Hotfl. where the Commissioners remained for the night. U 8.30 p.m., the Commission were inter viewed by Messrs. Thynne, Gray, and Russoil on behalf of tho inhabitants of Foxton. The Chairman received the deputation, nnd enquired whether they wished to make a statement or give sworn evid"nco. Mr Thynne said they *vould prefer the latter. Mr Thynne was then duly sworn, and gave a very lengthy statement to the Commission of the land in South Manawatu, its quality, the probabilities of the lino paying, &;c., being undu* examination about an hour. A large number of questions were asked by the various Cora missionois, and a full statem-nt given. The only other witness examined was Mr Russell As a shorthand reporter took down ihe evidence, together v ith questions and replies given, the public will in due course be able to read a fu.l report ofthe proceedings. As the Commission is a strictly private body, we are unable to publish a. report, of what took place. Ou Saturday morning, the Commission started southwards. They were taken up tho M.tntw.ttu River in a boat until tlio proposed railway line was reached, where horses were ready waiting for them.
