MANAWATU HIGHWAYS BOARD.

Thursday, Mabch 11, I3i*o. engineer's report. Since the last, meetiug of this Board, I have visited the wholo ofthe formed roads within the distriot, and beg to submit the following report for your consideration and approval. No. 1 Waru. The various works in this ward are finished, and vouchers are herewith furnished for paymert. Un the Feilding- Halcombelown road line three of the bridges have fallen to pieces through decay. I communicated with the Ch lirmau through the Secretary, and received instructions to spend £l(), if I ••ould repair the said bridges with that amount, otherwise to rail for tenders f>r building new bridges. I **dopled the latter course, and called tenders, to be in to-day at 11 o'clock a.m. The Maiawatu County Council voted the sum of £350, to be expended in the following manner: — £50 on road loading from public cemetery at Sundon ho Haleomhe ; £100 on clilf road leading from Sandon to tho Manchester Block ; £100 be laid ont in cutting a ditch on the highest sid*i of a road leading Irom Bailey's propeity in Sando ■ to Freckliugton'a; £50 in building brilges over creeks on Speedy's Line ; £50 for metalling on road leading from Foxton main road to the Taipo bush. By instructions from Chairman I lnve called tenders for the above works. Tenders to be in to-day by 1 1 a ra. L. lt. Bryant k Co., the contractors for metalling on Fagan's Line, have written to me stating they aie unable to curry out their contract for the prior as per their tender — 19s per chain. The ditches on road line show indication of good metal, but upon opeuing same up the said metal is bo h dirty and limited to a few chains in length, iv somo parts tho -tripping being very de«p. I ha»e attached Mr Byrant's letter to this report. No. 2 Ward. ••Contractors for River-bauk Road have completed their contracts. Contractors for Whale line of roid are pushing on with their road. I have certified for fi*f*t payment of £50 on account of this contract. The M inawatu County Council, at thoir last meetiug, voted a sum of £ : "00, to be expended on a road lino known as Hicki'lrd's* Road, the money to be spent on forming the whole length of road between Campbel'tuwn and "liokford's I woi.ll suggest that Mr ttickford be allowed to take up the 25 chains of bush-felling and clearing near his property, to prevent the delay that will occur by calling tenders. I await yu'-r instructions to set out the work on Hick lord's line and call tenders for same. A road-line that requires forming, aud bri- ges built, is that known as Taipo line, aud the new road opened through Mr M 'l)ona'd's property. It will be impossible in winter-time tor settlers to come out this way, and even now they cannot bring drays. If they have aiy produce to take either to Feilding, Awahuri, or, Pi'merston, they must either trespass on settler's property or travel via Mount Stewart, ar by Sanson, making the distance about three times as if fur as would be if Taipo-M'Donald's road were opened. I No. 3 Wabd. The contractor for road-line at Motoa, |
