With reference to the purchase of the Sandon Railway by the Government, we understand some persons have supposed that according to the ■ District Railways Act the purchase could not be made for ten years This, however, is au error. As we understand the Act, it means, as we cjt^ plained in last is3u6j that the G-otern ment cannot Compel the Company to sell the Hue until it has been open for traffic at least ten years. This would not prevent the Company selling the line to the Government before that time. The Act does not say the Go> vernment may not buy before ten years have expired. It simply provides that the Company shall not be forced to sell before that time. If the Company is so disposed, it can sell, and Government can buy, at anytime. The whole question rests with the Company during the first ten years. After that the Government can force it to sell the lino to the Crown.
