FOXTON A PORT OF ENTRY.

.»_ . "We are gratified to announce that in a few days at furthest, Foxton will bo pioclaimed a Port of Entry and Warehousing Port About a fortnight ago, we were conversing upon this matter with Mr Loudon, aad as the result or what then took place, Mv London wrote to Mr E. J.Duncan, of Wellington, who it is known has considerable influence with the Government, and asked him to bring the matter again under the notice of Sir George Grey On Saturday morning last,Mr Loudon received the following telegram from Mr Duncan, which he kindly handed to us for publication : — ' Congratulate you tbat Customs Officer, Mr Burgess, has been ordered to Foxton. Proclamation Port of Entry next Government Gazette. — R. J. Duncan. We have persistently advocated this step, and are pleased that it appears the Government intend to fulfil immediately the promises made. Probably the returus at Foxton will not be very large for the first twelve months. People are so accustomed to regard Wellington as the port for this district, that we fully anticipate it will take some little time tor the storekeepers and merchants of

Manawatu to rid tlieriis'eives of that idea. The proclamation as a port of entry is another step, however, in tho advancement of Foxton to its proper and legitimate place as the commer» cial town of Mauawutm If tlie settlers themselves take advantage of tlie position they hold, the future of the town is assured. We cannot conclude without thanking both Mr Loudon and Mr Dunes v for the earnestness they have displayed regarding the matter.
