MANAWATU HIGHWAYS BOARD

The. Board met at the office, P l- ttmerstun, on Thursday last. Present — Messrs Dairy m pie (Ob aim an), McKenzie, Metheraon, Bruise, and M oh wan. The correspondence read included the following :— From the County Council, stating that only progress pay mtuis would in future be made of moneys voted by that body. From Mr thyn, asking for a road to .be made to section 187, Kiwitea Block. The Engineer reported the 'Work was already begun. From tie Railway Department, declining to grant free passes to the Warden* From the Colonial Secretary.re ex* tension of time for the preparation of the valuation roll, stating that the Board' could demoralize the judge of th« Assessment Court to grant the extension. Resolved — Thai; the Judge of the Assessment Court be communicated with, in order to obtain an extension of time to 17 th March, 1879, in conformity with clause 28 of the Rating Act. From same, stating no land had yet been sold on deferred payments, -within the Board's district, and accordingly no funds were due to it on the land account. A deputation of settlers on Milaan>'& line, waited on the Board, and urged the claims of land owners there to have a line made. The Chairman, in whose Ward the proposed road lies, promised to bring the matter under notice of the Board directly funds were in hand. The following resolutions were passed:— That the Chairman write to the Government for the £580 voted to the Manawatu Highways Board, for expenditure in the block on deferred payment land. (Mr. McEwan.) That the Secretary be instructed to wiite to the Chairman of the Waste Lands Board, informing him tha* certain road lines in the Kiwitea Block which were cleared by the Government in 1877 have been cleared on private land, and will have to be re-felled. That the Government be requested, inasmuch as the work in question was done by the servants of the Government, to refund to this Board the cost of re-felling said road line; the road, lines referred to being as follows :— Continuation of Mackie's line between sections 154, 155, and 156, and between sections 163 and 1 64 ; also, that roadline lying between flection 154, Kiwitea Block, and the Manchester Block. (Mr. McKenzie.) That the Engineer be instructed to arrange, with the men at present at work at per chain for widening the roadaline between McGregor's clearing and the township of Fitzherbexton. (Mr Bruce.) Tho following tenders were accepted :• - Contract No. 4, for clear* ing on Motoa road, for work to the amount of £50, J. Guerin; No. 3 Line, R. B. McKenzie, £55 ; Newcombo Swamp, £89 55., with cuverts at £2 each, Collins and McCarthy ; No. 3 Cemetery-Line, Foxton, Peter« son, £3 per chain for 10 chains. Accounts amounting to £360 were passed for payment. The next meeting takes place on March 20.
