— — -♦ • As the steamers Tui and Jane Doulgas were to leave on the same tide on Saturday, a friendly race between tha two vessels was arranged. The Tui was the first to get away from the wharf at 4.50 p.m., and waited in the stream for h«r rival, when a good start was made, the Tui slightly leading. As will be seen from the subjoined telegram, for which we have to thank Mr Keid,

purser of the Douglas, the result was ¥ ery close, the Tui beating by only eight minutes :— Wellington, Monday. The Toi arrived at 2.30 a.m. yesterday, and the Jane Douglas at 2.38. The Douglas passed the Tui off Kapiti, and led to Terawhiti, when the main boom carried away, and she lost the race. 1
