THE MANAWATU HERALD. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1878. THE COUNTY ELECTION.

It would be idle now to trace the cau3es -which led to tho return of Messrs Loudon and Koelcs trow at the recent election. Wo desire to say a few words as to the future We may say candidly, we regret the candidates we supported are not returned. We all like to be on the winning side, The decision of the electors, however, has shown thai our views were not those of the majority. This does not prove we were wrong, nor do we accept it in that light. Vox populi non Beinper vox Dei. The two candidates who are returned, are, however, placed in that position by the suffrages of their fellow-electors, and we are therefore bound to accept and treat them as the representatives of the Riding. On our part, having espoused a cause, we have done our level best to carry it through, and though we have lost, wo are not, ashamed of the battle we have fought. Sometimes a defeat is the very best thing that can occur to a candidate or a party. Wherever power or offico centres too long iu one individual or party, it comes to be regarded as a pre-emptive right, and such a state of things frequently leads to bad government. It is possible that the election which has taken placo may be the means of promoting, though indirectly, the welfare of the Eiding. We hope it may be so. As Messrs Loudon and Rockstrow are returned to the Council, we shall zealously watch their actions in the interosts of the public, who are our constituents, as well as theirs. We do not surren* dor the convictions which induced us to oppose their return. We regret especially that iMr Thynne is not returned, as his absence will be a loss to; both the Riding and County So far as thjß representatives are concerned, now the election is over, we bury the hatchet. A chronic state of antagonism would be disastrous to the district. But whilst we will criticise adversely their action where we daem it necessary, we will be

equally willing to give praise where it is due ;. and will heartily co-':p.-rato ;'\vitli them in auy efforts they make ■for the welfare of the County as a wholo, and the Awahou Ui.ling in particular
