MR FREEMAN R. JACKSON'S FORT

NIGHTLY REPOBT, Wednesday, Oct. 9.

The demand for store cattlo is not yet sal i.-ficd. anything in tho shape of stores commanding extreme rates, At the sale totir.y a large number of good stores came forward, tho prices in all cases being in favour of the vendor. Altogjthei 1 the sale was a capital one. The sheep were all sold at tho auction or afterwards. Horses were well competed fi>r— some very good prices being realised for first-class animals. At the Hawera yards on Friday, prices for Ktorcs were at extreme rates, qui'.e coming up to those of to-d;»y. ,

O.ittle. — At Ila worn 10S head were yarded. Prices were — Heifers, ,-Cl; steers, £4 los; three-year o'.cl, £0 ; milch cows, £7 Ss to £9 IDs. At the yurJs to-day 290 head catno forward, the pous biung quite full. Fat cattle were of iuftrior quality ; cows, .•£3 10s to £9 ; bullocks, A'B 7s 6d to £8 12s 6d; storo bullocks, £7 to £7 17s Gd; twoyear old steers, £sl7sQd; yearlings, £3 7s GJ to £i ; cows nnd heifers, £.5 IDs. J^hkep. -iSI head made up tho sale. Host mutton ltis Od ; others not so fat, lls 6d to 15s. Horses.— Cotwo xrm.y .ow/i animals were ofrored. Draughts up to £21; wdl.brcd backs, £2L, £21 o«, £>6 13 ; f.iir lucks, £t\ to £8 ss ; inferior weeds and ssrews. £1 los to £3. Expor.T3.— 110 head cattle, CGB sheep, and "-.'o horses. [From Sir Freeman li. Jackson's London Agents, via San Francisco.] 18, Finsbury Circus, London, August 15, 1878. By tho San Francisco mail, delivered on tho sl!i inst. , wo received dates from Sydney and Wellington to 20th and 2-sfcb June. Wool. — The failure of a firm of London brokers, though it has rather shaken the credit of the trade, is not expected to affect prices at tho sales opening next week, and the reduced imports being now an ascertained fact, to tho extent so far of upwards nf 70,000 bales, nnd otlu-r eircumstancas being also favourable, it is reasonable to suppose tliut prices will be well maintained. Tho available slock at present here is about 325,000 bales; but a considerable portion of this will probably bo held for NovemberDecembfir salos, for which the fresh arrivals will be comparatively small. Tallow has not fulfilled our expectations of a further rise, and, indeed, has retrogaded about 3d per cwt, the best mutton having recently been sold at 39s per cwt. The continued large imports from Russia accounts for tho state of the market, and, in absence of any speculation, we fear a low range of values is now in prospect for some time to come. The increased importa from New Zialmd are more than compensating for the decrease from Australia. ° :

Hiuea And Leather.— For the few Australian hides offered, there has been rather better competition ; but values are unaltered, while leather continues extremely difficult of sale.

Wheat. — Fine weather continued for a fortnight after last mail, but during the past 14 days we have had heavy thunderstorms and some squally days of wind and rain. On the whole, however, the wheat crop is being well secured, and seems likely to be much above tho average of late years. There has been some slight fluctuation in the market, but on the balance prices do not show much alteration. The new crop from New Zealand has attracted some attention, but is found to be of very varying quality, some having evidently Buffered from rain during harvest, and, though not so sprouty as last year, it has consequently a musty smell, and is otherwise out of condition. The value varies from 4O 3 for the very inferior, to 50s for really .good -sound New Zealand wheat. J£B- value of flour is -unchanged — say, 33b to 3osfor Australian, and 32s to 34a for New Zealand. — We are, &c,

Johnson & Allsup.
