COMMERCIAL
THE SOUTHERN MARKETS.
[Pre*3 Association.]
CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 20. . Tlie oat markets show no disposition to recover from the somnolence created by the recent break. The tone is still depressed, and, in tlie absence of business and tlie disinclination of the merchants to add to their holdings, quotations to farmers are difficult to make. Perhaps $s 3d to 3s 7d at country stations' for, Gartons would be the limit for merchants' ' offers at the present tune. There is a divergence of opinion between the merchants as to the values in various lines of produce. Small lines of Algerians have been sold at from 6s to 6s 3d 5.1., t.o.b : , but to take these figures as the basis of values would be to err on the side of optimism. Chaff is n»t in much request, and farmers ore not being- offered more than £5 10s at country istations. The white clover market remains firm. Here, again, isolated sales have been made at 2s 4d for good lines, but this figure is beyond the general estimate of "values. Red clover has not moved sympathetically, values being easier. Altogether in the present state of the market quotations are subject to sudden variations, and in a number of cases .should bo accepted as nominal. Potato sales have actually taken place as low as £1 10s at country stations.
