THE STORMY PRELATE
ARCHBISHOP MANNIX'S UT-
TERANCES
[Press Association.] Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association, OTTAWA, July 30
Archbishop Mannix denied that he had advocated that Australia thould attempt to create an independent Republic. He added; "Australia has not the reason Ireland has for setting up an independent Republican Goverment. The people of Australia, upon two occasions when the question was put. to the vote, agreed with mo and not with Mr Hughes. He has desarted the cause that he once espoused. He is a Britisher and an Imperialist of the worst type. Americans would not pay attention to what Mr Hughes says if they know what the Australians think of him, but I will deal with Mr Hughes when I return to Australia."
Archbishop Mannix concluded: "It is strange that some people are appealing to the Vatican because of some of my statements, and these are the same persons who continually say that the Vatican and Pope should be kept i'ree of all politics. I. have not had any message from the Vatican.".
