BOARD OF GOVERNORS
The monthly meeting of the -Board of Governors of Marlborough College was held yesterday. There were present: Messrs E. H. Penny (chairman), J. J. W. White., W. J. Girling, O. Ferguson, and R. McCallum, M.P. Messrs " Pike, Macey, and Birch were granted leave of absence. Accounts (including teachers' salaries) amounting to" £181 l^s 5d were passed for payment. Mr McCallum reported that the Picton School Committee had nominated Mrs Arthur for appointment in the place of Mr R. J. Bell, who was retiring, as Government nominee. A specification of the duties required of the caretaker Avas submitted by the Principal and secretary. The salary was fixed at £120 pea- annum, Mr Bevan to be .confirmed in the position subject to one month's notice on either side xipon his signing the necessary contract. , Messrs Penny and McCallum reported having had a long and favorable interview with the Director and Assistant Director of Education and Mr Spencer, concerning the proposed hostel for the purpose of boarding pupils at the College. The same treatment would have to be meted out to all secondary institutions similarly situated. The. extra cost of labor and material at the present time was a factor to be taken into account, but notwithstanding that the necessity of Marlborough Avas fully recognised and would be fully and fairly considered.
It was resolved that the election for a member to represent the represent the parents'be held on 4th July. Mr Cirling is the retiring member, and notified that he would offer his name for re-election.
The Principal reported that the tennis courts required repairs. The sum of £5 was in hand for the purpose. A further £10 was voted. A circular was received from the secretary of the Otago High School relative to the proposed conference of hoards of secondary institutions. It was resolved that the Board concur in the necessity for holding a conference for the. purpose of considering salaries and appointments, as well as the training of teachers.
The secretary's salary was reconsidered in view of the stopping of the war bonus, and was fixed at £7 per month from Ist July next.
