It -was stated i that Sergeant Orr, an Adelaide , soldier, had desired to obtain a posi- ■ tion on the. headquarters staff. A man earned Mordeeai Markham in-, i traduced Orr to Dr Bell, who received £25 for performing an operation on the knee. Asa result of this opeartion Orr was in hospital for Some time. He subsequently confessed to ;the Australian Provost-Marshal. It was then arranged that WarrantOfficer Hawkins should obtain a. similar introduction to that of Sergt. Orr: In this case Bell asked for £50 for the operation, the arrangements being made in the hearing of a detective who was hidden. under a bed in an hotel. ' The Magistrate intimated that he was reluctant to punislii-the/ prippners for an offence which the, authorities had instigated, The., authorities might be regarded as iagents provocateurs.
