who thought it miglit"finish this year —and this/ was quite possible—but he thought that Germany could carry on tor a vejy long tinie'yet. Sir Joseph Ward, m touching on the samo subject, expressed the view that the man we relied on for bringing about the termination of the war successfully was Sir Douglas Haig, whom Mr Massey and kimself saw at his headquarters. Sir Douglas H«ig had no doubt as to what the outcome of tho war would be. He had a spirit of determination which could not be misunderstood, and all he required were the necessary reinforcements. He had everything that was wanted in the way of munitions and transports. Sir Joseph added that he was of opinion that next year—and early next year—might see the end of the war> It was the view of many in the Old Country that the enemy was coming xo the end of his ability to hold out, even on the bluff side.
