VARIOUS ASPECTS OF THE
SITUATION
LONDON, May 24. Italians in' London are enthusiastic. There was a. . great demonstration when war was declared. West' End waiters are eagerly awaiting, the call to the colors. There are five-thou-sand Italians in England available for ■service. Numbers,, are besieging the Consulate for passports. Austrian terrorism is rampant in Pola. ■■• Most of the Italians l^ve been arrested and despatched to concentration camps. German laborers wu unceasingly fortifying the Trentino. The Berne correspondent of the Temps lias announced that Switzerland is taking charge of German interests in Italy. Amsterdam reports that Berlin to--ceived Italy's decision with tho" utmost calmness. The German press ,Ls bitterly resentful, and considers {.hat Austro-Germany would be victorious whether Italy were neutral or ■otherwise. Her intervention may prolong the war. Baron Sonnino, tha Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs, played the game with false cards. The .Anstro-German staff had long foreseen Italy's intervention ana hid, taken all necessary measures. Italy "will yet regret her mad interfer--1 ence.
An Austrian Note, sent to Italy, expresses painful surprise at' the nbrupt annulment of the Triple Alliance* Treaty, which rendered Italy notorious services. It states that Italy knew that Austria had no ■intentions -of conquest in Servia, ana Austria never supposed that Italy would be identified with criminal inirigues against the security jind integrity of Austria, who declines, to regard as illusory Austria's promise that Italy would share territorially in the war gains after the war.
