HOKITIKA SEA FRONT.

AN ALARMING POSITION

A OONSIDBRABLB' EROSION

[Press Association.] HOKITIKA, April 30

The position on the sea front continues to cause considerable alarm. The spring tides, which are now receding, haje been remarkably,smooth, otherwise the disaster of a fortnight ago would have- been 'repeated:, with worse result^. •'

The sea continues to encroach on Revell Street daily, and during the last few tides a considerable erosion has taken place^ the low water mark being upwards of sixty feet closer inshore-, and*'there is. very deep water along the sea front. Protective works are being carded on by. the, Public Works Department, comprising the driving of a series of. piles eight feet apart sttraight to sea, these being planked partly. ' Very slow jxrogress has been made, only about twearty piles having been driven ten to fifteen feet deep in the last teii days. Considerable comment is being made on the tslow progress iand on tlie -manneo: in wihicli the danger is being grappled witih. A borough official gives the opinion tha.t unless more urgent steps are taken to secune the sea front if rough weather eventuates greater damage is bound to be caused. ;
