CLOSER SETTLEMENT.

PONGAROA, April 30. A deputaition asked the Hon. Mr Fraser that land be thrown open for closer settlement, with particular reference to the Burling Estate, situated near Pongaroa township. It was stated that there was a great demand for workers' homes.

The Minister said that the Prime Minister's main object was to promote close settlement of the smaller areas, and that was the feeling of the who^pi Cabinet. He would place the representations before the Minister for Lands. He felt sure that the latter Would obtain a full report on the subject. ,Mr Frasier said that there could be no general prosperity unless the land was held in smaller ajieas in a reasonable way, thus increasing the population and assisting the railway revenue. Every effort should be made in that direction. He would also tell the Minister 'his (Mr Fraser's) views on tho matter.
