HOUSING THE WORKERS.
SOME DAMNING EVIDENCE.
SEVEN FAMILIES IN ONE HOUSE.
[Press Association.] (Received Aug. 27, 9.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 27
■"' The report of Professor Irvine on the- question of housing the workers, which has been tabled in the Assembly, contains damning evidence of overcrowding, and resultant unhealthy conditions, in Waterloo, Surry Hills, Redfern, and other portions-of the city. If mentions one h'ause occupied by seven families. Several had only one room, where all the household duties were performed. Children in crowded areas were driven to frequent the streets, which, though healthier than the __ crowded houses, bad a corrupting influence. Street life needed no comment.
Referring to badly-lighted lanes, the report says that juvenile and adult immoralities were said to be practised- with little or no check. ,
