. AUCKLAND, Feb. 4. On Friday night a young woman 3iving at Mt. Eden was returning home shortly .after tea, when suddenly she was struck from behind, receiving a violent blow on the mouth, one tooth being knocked out. She screamed,' whereupon her assailant tried to mufHe her cries by placing his hand over her mouth. Assistance arriving the assailant decamped.. The young lady's face was badly lacerated. There was no attempt at robbery or molestation, and no reason can fee assigned for the assault.
