LONDON, Jan. 27. The newspapers devoted some attention to Australia's Birthday and thousands wore wattle in the streets.

A crowded gathering took place at th© Colonial Institute.

Sir George Reid expressed regret at Mr Deakin's ill-health and retirement. He had devoted the whole of his brilliant gifts to public life, and had" rendered memorable services to the State, the Commonwealth, and the Empire, Mr Cook would be a worthy successor. Sir George Reid gave a summary of facts, showing Australia's remarkable progress.

The hope was generally expressed that the celebration would be repeated on a large scale in 1914.
