PIRATES IN CANTON
CHINESE REIGN OF TERROR
LONDON, Jan. 3. Canton province, in China, is ex-
periencing a reign of terror. When bho revolution was proceed-; ing, 40,000 pirates enlisted as soldiers on the side of the Republicans, and afterwards demanded heavy compensation, before they would disband. The money was paid, and they have left Canton city, where 50 ; 000 soldiers have been continually under arms for fear there should be an outbreak. The country districts were thus
denuded of military protection, amd now what the pirates have gone back to the provinces it is known that they have started their old pursuits. Canton city is controlled by a man
named Tutuh, an obscure journalist. He holds reception, and so great is his fear of assassination that nobody is permitted to attend unless first stripped and searched, or else th« seeker of an audience is compelled to shout Ms requests from the far end of the huge audience chamber.
