The husband: I have not, my lord. I didn't go to gaol. His Worship: Oh, I see; you paid the fine, and got out. The husband: Yes. His Worship: You can get run in for drinking too much, but you can't help to keep your wife. The husband: Well, I only earned 5s 8d a week, and she has had her 28s a week regular. His Worship (to the woman): Where do you get the 28s from? The wife: I earn it working at a laundry. His Worship (to husband): You are a beautiful specimen of humanity, you are. You earn 5s 8d a week, and your poor wife has to go to a laundry and earn £1 Bs. You say you are not going to pay this money? The husband: I can't. His Worship: Well, you won't have a chance to get any more1 drink for— two weeks.—Dominion.
