MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Owing to the flooded state of the rivers the Magistrate telegraphed that he was unable to.attend the sitting of the Magistrate's Court today, and requested Constable Mathieson to requisition the services of two local Justices to deal with cases within their jurisdiction. Messrs James Hughes and W. H. Smith, J.P.s, dealt with the following debt cases:—Dr. Williams v. E. Bell, judgment by default for £2, with 8s costs; Wickes v. A. G. Newman,, judgment for 10s, and 3s costs. Price and Son v. H. Marshland, £2 6s 8d and £1 13s 8d costs. The defendant in this case had paid into Court the amount of the account less costs, and did not put in an appearance. Judgment for amount and costs, less amount paid into Court, was given. The following persons were summoned for allowing stock to wander on tlie "roads:—W\ Pickering, C. Harris, D. L. Reader, and G. H. Smith. The constable said that straying stock were a menace to people travelling on the roads. Only the day previously Mr Tyson had a spill through colliding with a straying beast. Some', people looked upon a small fine as a cheap grazing fee, and the only way to stop the practice was to inflict a heavy fine^—The Justices decided to inflict a fine of 10s and_ 7s costs in each case, with a caution that a recurrence of the trouble would be dealt with more severely. Several cases under the Factories Act and one other case, being be-, yond'the jurisdiction of the Justices^ were held over for the Magistrate on the 19th.
