The Mayoral and County Council elections caused record excitement, and the results were not known till midnight. T. Bnxton, M.P., was reelected for Mayor by a majority or 191) over Colonel Hay hurst. TIMARU, April 27. James Craigie, M.P., was re-elected for the tenth time as Mayor, beating his opponent, A. Beck, by 1984. Most interest was centred m tho Council election, there being 25 candidates for twelve seats. The Labor party were in the fight for the first time. The successful candidates were: W. C. Raymond, H. F. Morton, T. Hawkey, R. Shilitto, M. Higgins, G. J. Sealey, H. Green, W. Angland, W. A. Pearson, W. Satterthwaite, H. Goodwin, and J. Reader. The last-named in leader of the' Labor Party. Gilchrist, Harvey, and Beck (old Councillors) wore amongst the defeated.
The retiring members1 of the Harbor Board and High School Board were re-elected by substantial majorities.
