THE PICTON CONTEST.
Rain all day yesterday interfered materially with thefPicton. poll, and the voting was light,'only about 350 people exercising their privilege. The absence of a contest for the Mayoralty doubtless also had its influence on the poll. There were fourteen candidates for the nine seats, and the results were not announced until about 11 o'clock. This delay was caused mainly on account of the closeness of the first of the "outs" to the last of the "ins," necessitating a recount of their votes. There was a good crowd outside the booth awaiting the ' results, and at times the proceedings became rowdy. The returning officer (Mr J. Blizzard) announced the result, which was as follows:— Fell, S. ... ... ... ... 265 Peek, C. ... ... ... 256 Greensill, J. A. R. ... 233 Smith, G. A. jun., ... 227 Riddell, G. J. : 209 Pugh, L. ... ... ... 199 ■" Bush, A...;".. 181 Maitland, G. ... :.. 172 Clinch, A. ... ... ... 133 The above candidates were elected. The unsuccessful candidatesi were:— Raven, H. A. ... ... 130 Perano, E. C. ... ... 114 Fredericks, C. ■~.'■ ... 107 Lucena, W ... 81 Brunsell, C. J. ,■■„, ... 70 Informal — ... ... 2 After the figures had been read out the successful candidates returned thanks, and the Mayor (Dr Redman) congratulated the people upon having elected such a strong Council.
