PUMPS WORKING DAY AND
NIGHT,

GISBORNE, March 14
The scow Waikonini arrived from Tauranga after a 14 days' stormy passage. The second day out the vessel struck a south-east hurricane and mountainous seas. The forward centre board was carried away and the pumps had to be worked day and night. The vessel was blown to sea, and was seven days out of sight or land. She brought up opposite Mercury Bay. The. water in the tanks having been flooded the crew had to drink brackish water.
