OBITUARY.

MR ARTHUR BEAUCHAMP,

A Press Association telegram from Wellington announces the death of Mr Arthur Beauchamp, one of Marlborough's oldest identities. He wasa member of the Provincial Council in the early days, and was a foremostpolitician and leader. The late Mr Beauchamp was the first merchant in Picton. He interested himself in local politics, and became a member of the Provincial Council. Subsequently he was Member for Picton in the General Assembly. His career as a politicianwas not a very long one, but a notable instance in that career was the delivery of a speech in the Provincial Council on the removal of the seat of government from Picton to Blenheim v which lasted for over eleven hours,, when the object was attained by getting what was known as a countout. The late Mr Beauchamp was very proud of that effort, and when- > ever he met Mr A. P. Seymour, at that time Superintendent, he would refer to it with great pride.
