NEW ZEALAND LEADS IN THE
EMPIRE MATCH

WELLINGTON, March 11. Rain all day yesterday at Trentham made matters very uncomfortableThere was nothing for it but to go on with the matches, as the meeting closes to-day. The first stage of the Empire Match finished as follows: — New Zealand : 1050 New South Wales 1029 The marksmen taking part in the Gordon Highlanders Match had to lie on the soaked grass at targets which they could hardly see. The trophy was won by the New Zealand team with 7 hits, New South Wales scoring four. The Empire Match was fired under the worst possible conditions; a gale blew up the range, and rain descended in torrents. The marksmen were drenched to the skin. The' best score at 200 yards was W. Cutler's 49. At 500 yds Patrick's score of 49 was the best. The New Zealanders averaged 45.3 a man and 4.5 a shot; the Australians averaged 44.1 a man and 4.3 a shot. Halliday made the best score at 600 yards, registering 45. For the shooting over tbe three ranges New Zealand averaged 132.2, each shot being worth 4.37. The .'Australians averaged 128.6, the value of a hit being 4.28. The Champion Teams Match was secured by the Napier Guards (470) the Opaki Rifle Club f462) being second and the Nelson Rifles (454) third.
