NEW ZEALAND'S LEAD INCREASED.

TRENTHAM, March 11. The second stage of the Empire Match was continued this morning. The scores at 800 yards were as follows:—

New Zealand ... 326 New South Wales ... 316 New Zealand has now a lead of 31 points, with two ranges to go. The Logan Campbell Shield match is off, owing to the disappearance of the Auckland men last night. There are no money prizes in this match.

The "Bisley nose," whichl was the source of considerable amusement at the last meeting, has made its appearance at Trentham (states the New Zealand Times). The cause is the new aperture sight, which is set so far back that the recoil brings it in contact with the marksman's nose, should that organ be at all prominent. After one or two knocks the nose begins to show signs of wear, and loses patches of skin. One man declares that he is never satisfied with a shot unless it makes his nose bleed. Every time the sight fails to hit'him. in the face he gets no more than an outer. The price of a good score in his case is one which every marksman would not like to pay.

As an indication of the -wonderful progress of the rifle shooting of late years, it is interesting to recall the championship meeting of 1892, held at Trentham, which was run by Major Somerville, whose solitary range officer was Captain Lomax, while Captain (now Colonel) Collins did tall the statistical work. At the present meeting there are about twenty-five range officers, and the statistical officer has a staff of four. The only newspaper representative at the-1892 meeting was the late Mr George Humphries, of the Press Association. This year there are ten reporters at the meeting, not to mention several competitors who are newspaper correspondents, or the press photographers.
