SPEECHES BY LIBERAL
LEADERS
AN OUT-OF-DATE PRINCIPLE
(Received Jan. 6, 8.5 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 5. At the instance of Mr Howland Hunt, M.P., the-Post Office has issued a circular assuring old-age pensioners of the security of their pensions. Mr Asquith, in a speech at Brighton, defended the equitable valuation of land and other features of the Budget. He reiterated the supremacy of the House of Commons over "taxation and finance,- ■■. Mr Churchill, speaking at Dundee, ! said that the quarrel between the ' electorate and the onesided, wealthy Chamber had come at last, and the collision must involve a constitutional change. ■ Sir Edward Grey, at- Glaton, said that even a Liberal second Chamber, if based on hereditary right, would become increasingly Conservative in course of time. "The hereditary principle to the Liberals is out of date," he added.
