ELECTION
SEAT REVERTS TO TORYISM
[press association.] (Received March-3, 10.15 p.m.) LONDON, March 3. The by-election for Glasgow Central, rendered necessary by the death of Sir Andrew Tor ranee (Liberal) resulted as follows: —
Scott Dickson (Conservative)... 7298 Thomas G. Bowles (Liberal) ... 5185
Mr Bowles kept Free Trade as.the predominant issue. The Glasgow Herald, sinking the fiscal issue f<or the : time beingj supported Mr Dickson. ■•-■ r
The Daily News and Daily' Chronicle claim that a Tory seat;'won when Freei Trade was in danger, reverted to Toryism when Free Trade- had a majority of* three hundred: '
The Opposition are jubilant over the-first victory ■ for ■-Tariff Reform in Scotland since the General Election in 1906. ' '
[At the General Election the late Sir A M. Torrance obtained 6720 votes, and the sitting member (Mr -J. G. A. Baird, Conservative) 6289. It was stated the other day that the Liberals were perturbed at the action of Mr Bowles in placing Home Rule before the fiscal question in his platform.]
