MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
PORTER v. MANTHELL
This case which was part heard yesterday morning was continued in the afternoon, Mr Churchward calling the defendant Manthell, who gave evidence* as to Porter's work at the mill and the terms of his agreement.
After hearing the additional evidence his Worship gave judgment for £10 18s 6d and costs.
CONNELL v. SMART BROS
William Connell sued Messrs Smart Bros., timber merchants, for the sum of £3 ss, balance of wages due, and £3 amount of wages in lieu of notice. Messrs Smart Bros, put in a counter claim for damages, caused by plaintiff failing to carry out their instructions^, and £3 for a week's wages in lieu, of notice; the question in this connection being whether Connell was dismissed or whether he left of his own accord. The total of the counter claim was £6 16s 6d. Four witnesses were called and ex-
amined, but as Francis, one of the witnesses .who would be required was away up the Awatere, an application was made for an adjournment until Wednesday next, which was granted.
