Jl NIGHT IN THE TAYLOR JBASS

JOn .Thursday evening at .6 o'clock the Mounted Rifles left their camp at .Taylor Pass and .thence to the MaxTayolr Pass and thence to the MaxWell Pass, where a picket was formed. An advance guard had been thrown .cut by Lieut. Prichard on the.way mp, while Lieut. JFreeth had command •x>r the main body. Qn arrival at the Maxwell Pass a reconnoitring patrol was sent five :miles along the Taylor iPass JS>ad, .ajid Cossack posts were ihrowji .out by -Captain, Watson. The {patrols were kept ,in motion all night, and the country was watched .from She Show Ground to fhe Red Hills. I .At midnight the outposts were inrspeeted by . Lieut.-Cqls. Joyce and Chaytor. Coffee was served to the men at midnight and again at 4 a.m., and .at 4.30 the (Cossack posts and patrols ana anarched back te> camp, arriving there at 6 o'clock. During the time^they were out the anen. provided their own shelter, and the whole of the operations were cari*ied out under service conditions. The squadron worked well, and the men expressed themselves as .willing to repeat the experience. Yesterday afternoon the squadron paraded for the purpose of giving Lieut Stace his practical examination, and at 5.30 p.m. Lieut.-Colonel Joyce held an inspection, 55 rank and file being on parade. Nurse Gillies also inspected the camp, and expressed her satisfaction with the clean manner in which it had been kept." Camp broke up this morning, after a good week's work. Colonel Joyce stated that he was highly pleased with the way in which the squadron worked; some of. the drill, he said, was as good as he had seen anywhere in New Zealand.
