CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
SOCIETIES WANT SUBSIBIES AND WIBER POWERS.
[PEESS ASSOCIATION,]
WELLINGTON, June 26. A deputation from the conference of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals waited on the Hon. Mr McNab to-day, and stated that the time was ripe for the introduction of legislation to assist them in their work, as at present the societies could proceed under only one clause of the Police Offences Act. It was urged that there was also need for reform in elaughtering methods, especially the abolition of "pitting" cattle. Amongst >ther things, the deputation also asked that the work carried on by the societies should be subsidised by the Government.
The Miniser suggested that _a private member should be induced to introduce a Bill upon lines agreeable to the conference. The matter of a subsidy was one that his colleagues would have to deal with.
