GOOD-CONDUCT PRISONERS.
THE ESCAPEES FROM WAIOTAPU
MR McGOWAN INTERVIEWED
[press association. 1
WELLINGTON, May 15
The Minister for Justice, in an interview to-day, said that the protest from Auckland against the class of prisoners sent to the Waiotapu treeplanting camp was based on a misconception. "The men transferred to the Hot Lakes .district are carefully selected^ and every care is taken that only prisoners whose conduct in the town i gaols is good are sent to the camp.' There has been no outcry from the Rotorua district about the class of men sent to Waiotapu." The percentage of escapes has, he,says, been remarkably small. The experiment has been a great success, and he will not agree to the abolition of the system.
