THE BROKEN HILL MINES.

NO DIVIDEND THIS QUARTER.

[press association.]

SYDNEY, April 27. The decision of the Broken Hill Proprietary not to declare a dividend this quarter came as a great shock to Broken Hill.

The explanation that the low price of metals and the additional cost of working caused the directors to pass over the dividend is received with incredulity. It is believed to be an indication that- preparation is being made for some labour trouble or a severe slump in metal values. .The chairman of directors states that the lowness of metal values and the increased cost of production have affected the earnings of i>Ee company to the extent of £100,000; therefore the company has not earned a dividend, and cannot pay one.
