ATHLETICS v. AWATERE.

The visitors from Nelson made amends for their defeat at the hands of the Wairau Club on Friday by decisively beating Awatere in Blenheim yesterday by an innings and 125 runs. The home team were seriously handicapped by the absence of some of their prominent players; nevertheless, Athletic thoroughly deserved, their win, for their cricket all through was brisk and bright. Awatere'batted first, and had only one run on the board when the first wicket fell. The team never looked like making a stand, arid over-eager-ness to make runs cost three of the batsmen their wickets. The innings realised 77 runs, of which W. O'Dwyer made 28 and Tyler 11. Neale and Chisholm were the most successful bowlers.

With half and hour or sO to go before lunch the Athletics went in, and when the adjournment came had rattled up 76 for the loss of one wicket, Neale and Louisson having "collared" the bowling. On resuming both these batsmen were soon dismissed, but runs continued to mount up, and before the last wicket fell the total was 241, seven of the players having reached double figures. Barnett and Neale each hit two sixers, and fours were frequent. Of the five bowlers who were tried, O'Dwyer, J. W. Humphreys and Martin were the only ones who took wickets.

On going in again, Awatere starred badly, O'Dwyer being caught out with the total at 1. After the departure of J. W. Humphreys for a solid 13 there was not much opposition made to the trundling of Neale and Louis- { son, and the innings closed for 38, or 125 behind Athletics one "strike." y The fielding of the visiting team was uniformly good, and that of Awatere fair, one of the exceptions being J. W. Humphreys, who did excellent work.
