MEIKLE'S CLAIMS.
DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER.
THE COMPENSATION QUESTION.
[Vress association.]
WELLINGTON, July 25. - In reply to a deputation from theMeikle Committee, which waited on him to-day j the Premier said that it was one of the fine sides of nature tosee a committee working on behalf of a man who, they considered, had been wrongfully sent to prison. He thought" that it was proper to give effect tothe recommendations of the Commission, and he intimated that legislation was being prepared with the object of having Meikle's name deleted from the criminal records. The amount of compensation was a difficult question to determine, but it was being inquired into by the whole of the Ministers. He did, not wish to reflect on the Commission's' .report m any way, but he said that it contained matters which made the task vffi ,xGovernment in this direction adifficult one. Probably a determination would be arrived . at in the next fortnight. He would let the secretary ot the committee know the result.
