'■ [PEESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, July 25. ,Tiie City Council held a special meeting to-day to consider a proposal to.amend the by-laws to allow a certain number of passengers to stand in the tram-cars. A deputation from the Tramwaymen s Union strongly protested against the proposal, and the matter was eventually referred back to the committee for reconsideration. The Mayor is forwarding a letter to the chairman of directors of the Electric Tramway Company in London in reference to friction in the matter of running and management of trams notably the insufficiency of rollingstock and electric power, upon which public feeling runs very high Th© Mayor asks if the company would be prepared to negotiate for the sale of the whole of its interests in the tramH SI ? + Auckland l t° a local Tramways Board, to work the concern in behalf ol the various local bodies interested : I 1 s?> "l>?n what basis can the 1 L, to be paid be assessed? The Mayor estimates that forty per cent, of the shares are held in Auckland and that the British Electric Irachon Company holds the remainder.
