PICTON.
(Our Own Correspondent.)
During last Saturday's gale some little excitement was caused at Portage by a run-away dinghy with a man in it. The man had one paddle, and-was striving—in the bow— to turn the cockle-shell towards the landing-place, but the wind -caught it and sent it. flying, first in one direction, and then in another ;then a willy-waugh would send it spinning round, till the lookers-on became giddy. After a fight with the elements, the occupant of the dinghy got her head on to the rocky beach, and landed anywhere, glad tojfeel terra firma again, r. I hear that Mr Palmer, of Mahakipawa, has sold out ..his farm to Mr Farmar, and also that there is a likelihood of a creamery being started in the Mahakipawa districts Messrs5-G. B. Richardson and Valentine visited the district this week, and interviewed the principal landholders with the idea ot negotiating in that direction. Picton is to be quite gay this week. The Blenheim minstrels visited the town last evening. To-night the ladies*' hockey club have a social in Fay's Hall, which, judging from the interest taken in it, is expected to be a great success, and to-morrow (Friday) there is to be a social in the Sunday-school, in which also a great deal of interest is being taken.,. Miss Chaytor and Mrs Allen are hostesses:/ and a clever original charade, written specially for the occasion by a Picton young lady will be one of the items on tils' programme. Another item will be a funnjr drawing competition, and some new voices will add interest to the occasion. On Saturday the Perry Biorama Company have Fay's Hall engaged, so that we are likely to enjoy a surfeit of dissipation.
