METHODIST MISSIONS.

TO BE EXTENDED TO INDIA. [press association.] (Received June 8, 0.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 7. The Methodist Conference discussed to-day the proposal of the London Wesleyan Methodist Society for the extension of the operations of the Methodist Missionary Society of Australasia to India. Dr Brown moved the adoption, of the recommendation of the New South Wales Conference, that the mission to India be postponed for the present, on the grounds that a large amount of mission work still remains to be done in the islands of the Pacific, and of the extra expenditure. He pointed out that the current expenditure for the past three years exceeded the income by nearly £2,000. Dr Fitchett pointed out the smallness of the population involved in missions to the Pacific compared with India. The question was not only were they spending the money in a good cause ? but were they spending it to the best effect? They were told to do the work at their doors. Measured by time, India was nearer than some of the Pacific Islands. He moved an amendment providing that the Mission Board send one or more men to India to train for mission work and prepare > for the Australasian mission, it being left to the Mission Board, on information collected at once, to organise a permanent Australasian mission in India or maintain the preparatory mission till the'next General Conference. Dr Fitchett's amendment was carried by a large majority. .
