The editor of the Mutual Provident Messenger, who has just returned to Sydney from New Zealand, writes: —

" The natural beauties of the country are probably unequalled by those of any other country in the world, and the colony is a veritable tourists' paradise ; but under existing conditions few visitors v will risk a second visit. The railway' accommodation is jwholly inadequate and the management extremely inefficient, while the hotels, except in, a few of the leading centres. are models of discomfort. The Exhibition at present open in Christchurch is attracting enormous crowds of visitors^ who appear content to spend their time and money in riding down watershoots and toboggan slides.""

Poseidon (in Victoria) has arrival in it:, neighbourhood. A new rush has broken out near the old "Slip Up" diggings, halfway between Tar^ nagulla and Newbridge. The field was first .worked about fo*rty years ago, when it proved a,.." duffer," and two miners who got stranded, became lost in the bush, and died from starvation. "Several fossickers have at times got good gold from pot holes in the old gaily, but they never succeeded in finding the lead. A prospector from the Poseidoiv»field has, however, now located the gutter on Crown lan*ds, and obtained lOdwt of water-worn gold from the bottom of a 12ft shaft. There were soon over one hundred men on the field; pegging along what is considered to be the line of the reef. A good deal of development work will be necessary to thoroughly prove the ground. '
