MISS HOWELL'S DEATH.
OPENING OF THE INQUEST
[PBESS ASSOCIATION.] MASTERTON, April 12. I.he inquest on the body of Miss Howell, which was twice exhumed, began to-day. Mr H. D. Bell, representing the Crown, reviewed the evidence to be given at,considf:-ablo length, and explained the reasons why application was made for exhumation. Robert Edward Howell, brother of the deceased, was the first witness. He stated that his sister had lived with Miss Hall for three or four years. Latterly they had had a nursing-home in Masterion. He first heard of his sister s illness a few' days before Christmas, trorn a friend who was staying at the house. On' Christmas Day Miss ■Hail rang him up and asked him to go with the deceased as far as Taueru. -tie did so, and noticed a great change in neiv He detailed the symptoms, and said she complained of thirst and pam in the stomach. At the beginning ot January the witness and Dr Ross went to Castlepoint in consequence of a- telephone message from Miss Hall. They found his sister in oed,. worse, and still complaining of
