A BANKRUPT'S HEAVY LOSS.
DODGING THE OFFICIAL
ASSIGNEE
A REMARKABLE STORY
SYDNEY, March 11., Geo. Plowman, of Towac, Canoblas. farmer, was examined in bankruptcy to-day regarding a missing" sum of £1000. He said that it was taken from him. It represented money that was supposed to have been paid to him under an agreement devised to hide " dummying." When he saw that the Official Assignee was trying to get hold of it he put it in the Bank of Australsia, at Orange, in the name of his wife and himself. Fearing it would be secured by the Official Assignee from the bank, he took it out and planted it. Someone found it and took it, but it came into his hands again. Some of his family had taken it, and put it in the Savings Bank in their names. They took it out and gave it to him, and he decided to go to Queensland, where the law would not find him. He thought he would call and see his sister at -Hornsby before he went. He hqid the money with him in a bag in notes. He put the bag in the rack of the railway carriage when leaving Hornsby, and when he got to Orange it was gone. He had slepc a bit, but he never lost sight of the bag except at Bathurst, where he got out to have a cup of tea. When he returnedthe carriage* was full of people, but he did not notice any difference in the bag, and he did not miss th§ money till .after he arrived at Orange. He then went straight back 'to Hornsby in a cattle truck, but he could not trace the missing money. He was sure it was in the bag when he left Hornsby. There was £1730 altogether, the £1000 and other moneys raised from various sources, and'the whole lot had disappeared. He did not report the loss to the police.
