A TEN DAYS' " BENDER."

SYDNEY, March 11. ' James McEvoy, described as a squatter of Gundagai, was defendant to-day in an action brought by May Francis, of Crown Street ,to recover £70, money alleged to have been spent by her at defendant's request, and for accommodation. Defendant paid £25 into Court, and pleaded that he was not indebted a& to the balance.

' Plaintiff's case was to the effect that defendant came down "on a bender," and was accommodated at her house for ten days, for which he was charged £6. Other items in the bill included eight cases of a special brand of champagne at £5 15s per case, procured, it was stated, at defendant's request; £1 for a turkey, which defendant entertained himself by killing; 10s for telegrams sent to his family intimating that the was " all right," and various sums for cab hire and dinners and suppers ordered from Paris House.

It was stated that defendant was on his way to England, and consequently could not attend Court. His counsel submitted that it was a case "of attempted " lambing down," and that the amount paid into Court was ample. The jury returned a verdict for plaintiff for £22 Is 4d over and above the amount paid into Court.
