THE BRITISH MINISTRY.
OUTSPOKEN CRITICISM
LORD ELGIN'S REMOVAL
ADVISED
[PRESS ASSOCIATE? "* (Received Jan. 7, 10.2 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 7, The Daily News, the Liberal Free Trade journal, says: "If we cannot put Mr Redmond in Mr Bryce's place as Chief Secretary for Ireland—which he of all men is the fittest to occupy— we ought to choose no weak-or inconspicuous figure, nor a man comparing disadyantageously with Mr Wyndham and the distinguished Tory statesmen who graduated there. The Ministry in other departments requires strengthening. Lord Elgin should be relieved of a position for which he has never shown any fitness. Liberals have anxiously watched many a danger-point in the South African policy. Lord Elgin has,not contented the Colonies. We are afraid that the absurd restrictions on the number of Premiers attending the Colonial Conference have done much harm; the same remark applies to the treatment ot Australasia in the matter of the New Hebrides." i ..„..
