FIVE YEARS' IMPRISONMENT. KNOWLES SENTENCED TO \ DEATH. [press association.! . PALMERSTON N., June 9. Maria Harris was found guilty of manslaughter of a horse-trainer named Murfitt, and sentenced to five years' imprisonment. The prisoner collapsed on hearing the sentence, and her lamentations could be heard until she was removed from the precincts of the building. In the case of William Knowles, labourer, who shot his wife dead, a verdict of guilty was returned, with strong,recommendations to mercy in view of the abnormal state of his mind. . Witnesses were called to show that prisoner was suffering from insomnia and grieving over his domestic troubles. Tho prisoner made a long, rambling statement, making accusations against the deceased, and finished up singing. Prisoner was sentenced to death. :
